In the 21st century, South Yarra cements its place as one of Melbourne’s most desirable suburbs. Its architectural tapestry includes a diverse mix of buildings, each with their own personality and mode of expression.

For nearly 25 years, ROTHELOWMAN has maintained strong links with Melbourne. From high-rise developments such as Albert Tower in South Melbourne, to the spectacular boutique Aqueous apartments in Port Melbourne, the architecture and interior design practice is acclaimed for producing novel residential solutions.

Drawing from the narrow context, the architects have split Essence into a series of vertical elements, vertical planes and building blocks. This reduces the building’s scale into smaller pieces, which are easier to digest into the streetscape.

Taking cues from South Yarra’s rich retail culture, the interiors are underpinned by themes of fashion. A glamorous lobby bedecked in marble references the idea of a catwalk, while the mailroom is set up like a luxury boudoir.

Inspired by French designers Coco Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent, each apartment is elegant with an

understated material and colour palette. Natural surfaces such as stone, timber, glass and wool enhance the interiors and satisfy the senses.

The streamlined kitchen incorporates an island bench with a beautiful marble screen, which hides the clutter. Ample cupboards and drawers serve as great storage space, and open shelving provides places to put your favourite things on display.

The bathrooms have large format tiles and a pared back colour palette. A shower door handle acts

as a towel rack and also a storage shelf for shampoo and conditioner.

Each apartment has a balcony, which is recessed within the façade of the building. This softens the threshold between inside and out and creates a much larger living area.
